THE SHORT VERSION

Streemlion services include SOCAN music licence.

Streemlion Socan Number: 5052662

When you operate under Streemlion, eligible services are covered by our SOCAN licence for Canadian territories. We handle royalty reporting and payments on your behalf so music creators and publishers are properly compensated.

If your station targets listeners outside Canada, additional licensing may be required depending on the laws and licensing framework in those countries.

01What is Streemlion?

Streemlion is an internet radio hosting service built to make it easier for anyone — from hobbyists to professional broadcasters — to start, manage and grow an online radio station.

02Do users really have licence coverage?

Yes. When you operate under Streemlion on an eligible service, your station is covered by our SOCAN licence within the applicable Canadian scope. Streemlion handles the related royalty reporting and payments on your behalf.

03Which locations does the SOCAN licence cover?

Our SOCAN licence covers Canadian territories. Additional licensing may be required if you broadcast to or specifically target listeners in other countries, depending on the laws and licensing requirements in those locations.

04Since SOCAN is Canadian, does that mean my station is Canadian too?

Yes. Streemlion streams covered by our SOCAN licence operate under a Canadian service. When listing your station on directories or identifying it on your website, you should present the station as Canadian-based for licensing purposes.

05Do you provide materials that identify my station as SOCAN-covered?

Yes. Streemlion provides a “SOCAN Licensed to Play” web banner and a radio drop that can be scheduled into your playlist. These help clearly identify your Streemlion-powered station as operating under our SOCAN licence.

06Does my SOCAN licence impose any restrictions?

Yes. No music licence grants unrestricted rights. Important Streemlion conditions include:

  • Advertising: paid advertising or commercials are only permitted where the applicable Streemlion plan allows them, including GrandLion.
  • Stream source: coverage applies to music broadcast directly through the Streemlion platform, including AutoDJ and live broadcasting.
  • Third-party relays: external or relayed streams are not covered by Streemlion’s SOCAN licence.
  • Music use: the licence does not permit illegal file sharing, unauthorized redistribution or on-demand music activity outside the permitted broadcast framework.
07What music can I play?

SOCAN’s reciprocal relationships with international performing-rights organizations allow licensed services to publicly perform a broad global catalogue of copyrighted music. You may play music that you have acquired legally or that has been supplied to you by the rights owner.

This does not mean Streemlion holds separate licences from every foreign rights organization. Additional licensing may still be required outside Canada.

08Do I have to use the Streemlion SOCAN Popup player?

Yes. The required Streemlion SOCAN Popup player is part of the listener-facing licensing framework for eligible Streemlion stations. It is provided free on the applicable service, subject to the current setup terms.

09What about listeners in the United States or other countries?

Streemlion’s included SOCAN licensing covers Canadian territories. If your station targets listeners elsewhere, you may need additional licences for those jurisdictions. For example, United States music licensing can involve organizations such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and SoundExchange depending on the rights involved.
